HOW JACKIE STARTED RUNNING COURSES

Having attended a three year icon painting course with Peter Murphy in Canterbury, Jackie was keen to develop some week-long courses at her church in Soberton. The 13th century South Transept has wonderful natural light and is a good space for working in.

The icon painting courses at St Peter’s have been running since 2015 and now attract a regular cohort of attendees as well as new students each year.

Teaching people how to use egg tempera and to gild using 23.5 carat gold is always a ‘thrilling challenge’ says Jackie, ‘ it is always rewarding to see people, some of whom have never painted, getting to grips with this ancient technique of painting and at the end of the week producing a beautiful icon’.

Each year Jackie looks for different icons to paint and recently ran a course painting St Swithun after the prototype at Winchester cathedral.
